05/13/2022: Xlendi (3)

If I thought yesterday was a relaxing day, today was even more so (Eve A., you should be very relaxed now). We had a leisurely morning until 11:00 a.m., the time Christine typically goes swimming at the Y. Today, she decided to brave Xlendi Bay. Yesterday, she stood on the balcony with a pair of binoculars looking for jellyfish in the water. There were lots on Wednesday and somewhat fewer yesterday. This morning, after searching the water with binoculars, she spotted only a few and decided to take the plunge. Mind you, the water temp is 61.7 degrees. That’s really cold!

Christine suited up and we walked down to the water’s edge. I only saw one jellyfish, so that was encouraging. Christine planned her route, out to where the sandy bottom was where she could see any jellyfish a little easier than along the bay’s edge where there were rocks and grasses.

Down a ladder she went, standing with her feet in the water searching for jellyfish. That’s not easy to do without glasses!

Not seeing any jellyfish nearby, she stepped farther down the ladder, turned around, pronounced the water cold, and then off she went.

She didn’t swim long, but nonetheless, the woman braved the cold water and the jellyfish.

It’s too bad about the jellyfish because Christine loves to swim and I think the cold water wouldn’t be a deterrent, but the jellyfish certainly are. She said when you see them up close they really are quite scary and with currents and movement of the water, one has little control over avoiding them, especially when there are many. But, she swam in Xlendi Bay!

After that, we spent the afternoon at the apartment. I just love looking around from the balcony. There is so much to see. And that rock across the bay from us has a lot of activity. We can see lots of people walking across to go down the steps to Carolina’s Cave. And at the top, we frequently see hikers. They look like little ants up there. That rock is probably 25 stories tall and some hikers go right out to the point. Can you spot two hikers in these photos?

The hiking path goes along the top of the ridge and then down the other side along the cliff tops. However, some hikers decide to come down across the rock on the bay side, a very daunting challenge as there is no clear path down across the rock. Of course, when I see some hikers coming down I have to watch and give a running commentary on the route they’ve selected.

So that was our day. At dinner time, we checked out the menus of all the restaurants around the bay and had a hard time deciding. We settled on Moby Dick’s. They had two specials we wanted, linguine lobster and mussels in garlic wine sauce. They both were fabulous! Christine had trouble cracking open her lobster claw. It had the hardest, thickest shell we’ve ever seen. She really had to work for her supper. But the meal was really great.

Then, as seems to be our tradition in Xlendi, we walked over to the vendor who sells ice cream bars, our third visit. The vendor is now smiling and happy to see us, but I think he’s charging us too much. We took our ice cream bars back to a bench at the end of the bay and watched the dusk turn into night.

Another wonderful day in Xlendi just relaxing and taking in all the beauty of the place.
